A complete cloud transformation, in three months

Four years, three IT vendors, and a $400,000 ransomware attack couldn't get RTG to the cloud. CloudServus did it in three months.

Overview

For over two decades, Rodriguez Transportation Group (RTG), a roadway civil engineering firm with five Texas offices, has designed complex roadways for highways and freeways, producing construction documentation for the Department of Transportation and tolling authorities.

RTG's vision: operate as a modern, secure hybrid-remote business in the cloud, enable work from anywhere, and simplify the workflows behind opening new offices. But it was severely limited by legacy infrastructure: security challenges, an inability to scale, high costs from managing complex outdated services, and no way for its workforce to operate remotely.

The Breaking Point

One email cost $400,000

All it took was one malicious ransomware link in an employee email. The attack destroyed RTG's servers and replicated across four office locations; fixing the damage cost $400,000. Even after the cleanup, a File Transfer Protocol program buried on a server was still creating a backdoor into their systems, a serious problem for a firm working under strict government contract regulations.

Over four years, RTG went through three different IT teams trying to modernize its infrastructure and get away from on-premises servers. Nobody could handle the transition from on-premises Active Directory to Azure AD and Intune.

“For the past four years, we've gone through three or four separate IT vendors. Until I met CloudServus, I couldn't find anyone or any IT group that really knew how to manage our cloud transformation into Azure Active Directory and make it work.”
Steve Davidson · Chief Financial Officer, RTG
The Challenge

On-premises, and doing things the old way

RTG was locked into old multi-year network administration contracts with high fees and complex management. An on-premises domain controller hosted its user directory, group policies, and rules, with servers networked together to share directory information, creating security challenges and inefficient workflows.

Legacy infrastructure
A complex on-premises environment couldn't facilitate remote workflows and impeded collaboration and productivity.
Security
Excessive time and energy went to addressing system breaches and managing internal IT instead of core engineering work.
High costs
Multi-year vendor lock-ins, internal IT redundancy, and breach cleanup cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The Solution

Security first, then everything else

CloudServus approached security as the foundation: a zero trust, cloud-first model built on Microsoft Intune and Azure AD. A deliberate hybrid approach let RTG gradually decommission on-premises devices; employees simply log into new laptops shipped straight from the manufacturer, automatically connected to Azure with apps, policies, and drive encryption applied. All files moved to SharePoint for storage, sharing, and collaboration on the firm's CAD-generated construction documentation, with Microsoft monitoring email attachments and links in real time.

“Approaching security as the foundation for RTG's infrastructure modernization enabled us to use Microsoft Zero Trust and Intune to completely secure their network and data. Now because RTG can effectively and efficiently manage their security, they can innovate and focus on their own work responsibilities and core competencies.”
Dave Crawford · Vice President of Professional Services, CloudServus
The Results

Secure, automated, and connected

The transformation eliminated RTG's dependency on legacy domain controllers, file servers, and PBX phone systems:

  • On-premises dependency eliminated. The company can transition entirely to the cloud with no technological or operational barriers.
  • A completely secure cloud environment. The zero trust architecture fits RTG's hybrid workplace and safeguards against sophisticated threats.
  • Improved cost efficiency. Cutting redundant IT effort and switching to Spectrum Business Class saved over $9,000 per month.
  • Real productivity gains. Streamlined workflows and better collaboration on a modern infrastructure built for demanding CAD work.
“CloudServus accomplished what I've been trying to get done for four years, and they did it in three months, which was fantastic. Our company is operating like a well-oiled machine and we're positioned to expand to new office locations and environments.”
Steve Davidson · Chief Financial Officer, RTG
