August 2023 Windows Autopilot Updates

Windows Autopilot has some key features that make it even easier to manage devices. There are new improvements to profile resilience, feature additions like updates to the auto sign in experience, new Microsoft store app support, automatic device diagnostics, and new updates targeting infrastructure.

Update to BitLocker Recovery Key Process for Windows Autopilot
  • September service release changes BitLocker resets for reused Autopilot devices.
  • Users will now need to contact IT admin for BitLocker recovery key.
  • No impact if the device's primary user remains unchanged.
  • Self-service BitLocker access still available via remote Autopilot Reset or by reassigning the primary user.
  • Update primary user in device properties if the new user can't access BitLocker self-service.
  • What to do to prepare? Notify help desk and update documentation on BitLocker recovery options.
Win32 App Configurable Installation Time
  • Intune 2308 allows per app installation time configuration.
  • Extend the ESP timeout if app installation time is increased.
Autopilot Profile Resiliency
  • New update increases retry attempts for policy application.
  • Applicable updates for Windows 10 and 11 specified.
One-Step Removal of Autopilot Registration
  • Easier device management introduced in Intune 2307.
  • Removes registration without deleting device record in Intune.
Device Rename During Technician Phase
  • Device rename now occurs during technician phase starting in 2303.
  • Applicable updates for Windows 10 and 11 specified.
Install Required Apps During Pre-Provisioning
  • New toggle allows installing required apps during technician phase.
  • Option to fail only selected apps available.
New Microsoft Store Apps Supported with ESP
  • ESP now supports the new Microsoft Store apps starting with Intune 2303.
Win32 App Supersedence ESP Improvements
  • Ongoing rollouts aim to enhance ESP behavior around app tracking and processing.
Support for Temporary Access Pass
  • Autopilot now supports Temporary Access Pass starting with version 2301.
Autopilot Automatic Device Diagnostics Collection
  • Intune automatically captures diagnostics for failed Autopilot processes.
  • Diagnostics available for 28 days.
Updates to Autopilot Device Targeting Infrastructure
  • Change in August 2022 aims for more consistent profile and app readiness.
Update Intune Connector for Active Directory
  • .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later required from September 2022.
Enroll to Co-Management from Windows Autopilot
  • Co-management enabled during the Autopilot process in Intune 2205.
Improvements to the Enrollment Status Page
  • Search box, version column, and other functional enhancements added.
One-Time Self-Deployment and Pre-Provisioning
  • New step added to delete the device record as part of device reuse.

  • Pre-population of Azure AD UPN no longer allowed.

  • MFA claim is not preserved after device registration.
